Ortovox Haute Route 30 S Overview

The Haute Route backpack is a classic Ortovox design with thoughtful features for a long day in the backcountry, but the 30 S goes a bit further with its specialized features compiled for the benefit of smaller folks. Designed to fit and distribute weight perfectly with load-control cords and the ergonomic and stabilizing back system, the Ortovox Haute Route 30 S makes schlepping a fully loaded pack into the alpine a cinch. Pun intended. The specially designed shortened back system was made with smaller people in mind.

As one of those, it seemed only appropriate to be the one to test and review this pint-sized specialist.

Aspen, Colorado – where I happen to be based – experienced a unique mid winter snowpack in 2022. We had a very dry January and February, with relatively cold temps, which allowed for some steep skiing typically viewed as off limits with our traditional faceted layers combined with storm slab. Avalanche conditions dropped to “low” in February, so a group of us decided it was a good time to ski Five Fingers off Aspen Highlands Ridge. So I packed up the Ortovox Haute Route 30 S, placing my beacon shovel in probe in the designated outer pocket, and slithered my BCA radio cord through the hydration system slit. I threw in a warm puffy layer, various snacks, and helmet in the main compartment. I’m vexed to say I noticed the integrated helmet net after the adventure was over. My bad!

This sidecountry day adventure featured a lift ride to the top of Loge, followed by a 782-foot skin to the 12,392-foot summit of Highland Bowl. The Haute Route 30 S was great on the skin-up. The weight was distributed much higher up on my back then I’m used to, which allowed me to climb much faster on the steep “Heart Attack/Heartbreak Hill” section. From the colorful prayer flag-bedecked summit, we skirted under the boundary line rope and began a moderately technical downhill climb to a 1-hour ridge-line walk. I had secured my skis in the side ski fasteners (which can accommodate up to 150mm). The skis also sat up nice and high, which was a welcomed experience. With other backpacks, I’ll often kick the tails of my skis as I walk, which is just not ideal for balance and moving quickly through variable terrain.

As we approached our descent point, known as the “Pinky”, windy gusts began to whip around us. We quickly transitioned, and I found the shallow center pocket to be a boon for switching gear out. The shallowness prevented gloves/goggles/skins from slipping deeper into the pack and slowing down the process.

Finally, it was time to ski. Turns out the ridge walking was the fun part with 3,000 vertical feet of sun-baked wind crust awaiting us below. Still, a great day was made more successful by a high-functioning, thoughtful backpack.

Icelantic Maiden 111 Video Review

[Icelantic Maiden 101 Review at 1:03] Transcript – My first is going to be the Icelantic Maiden 101. In my mind it’s the most versatile of the Maiden series. It’s also going to come in a 111 and 91 under foot. The 101 for me just handles all mountain conditions really well. Still get nice floatation in powder. Flyweight core is going to keep it nice and light as well with the rocker in the tip and tail. It’s just a really great, fun all-mountain ski.

Line Pandora 110 Video Review

Transcript – Right here we’ve got a Line Pandora 110. It’s an awesome ski, it’s in Line’s women’s ski collection. It’s the widest ski in the Pandora line. It’s actually different than the other Pandora skis in the sense that it has a different shape and a different construction, too. Super, super fun powder ski, and a lot different things you can do with it in terms of a ski that’s 110 underfoot. Let’s take a look at construction. The use Line’s Partly Cloudy core, which is a blend of maple and paulownia. The ski is impressively lightweight. We see similar construction on the men’s Vision skis. In addition to that wood core, they use what Line calls Triple Hybrid construction. It’s really pretty interesting. They use a blend of fiber glass, carbon and aramid. Kind of right above the core of the ski. In fact, when you look closely you can see crosshatching grid of fibers that give the ski more torsional stiffness more energy, kind of more pop and spring. It’s certainly not a stiff flex pattern. It’s on the softer side, but it has a lot of nice energy and bounce to it. Which is a lot of fun. Looking at shape. It’s a lot of what you’d expect with a 110 ski. We do get some camber underfoot. There’s a lot of tip and tail rocker in the ski. Not a tremendous amount of early taper, but you get a javelin tip shape which is really nice.

Application for the Pandora 110. We’re really talking soft snow. It could be a dedicated powder ski for a lot of skiers. East coast, West Coast/ 100 underfoot is a nice width and crosses over from our smaller East Coast mountains to bigger West Coast terrain. I think particularly here on the East a big benefit for this ski is that it’s lightweight. Combine that lightweight with the amount of tip rocker or tail rocker that it has. It’s pretty agile, pretty easy to maneuver through tight trees. Take it out West and it’s got enough surface area through the whole ski that you can ski it fast and aggressively through open terrain and have a blast on them.

Like I said these are lightweight. An intention of these skis, and something Line kept in mind in designing them. these skis. There aren’t many options for a twin tip shape like this for people that want to use it an Alpine touring application…

Black Crows Atris Birdie Video Review

Transcript – We got a Black Crows Atris Birdie for you today. this is the same build and shape as the men’d ski. it’s just available in shorter lengths and in different graphics, so if you’re looking for the shorter size in the Birdie ski, the Atris is the way to go. In terms of construction, we got a full popular wood core here. Pretty simple, but like we see with a lot of Black Crow skis, it’s impressive what they can do with just a popular wood core, with what they do with the shape and the profile. So add a 108 mm under foot. this ski generates a 20 meter turn radius. It’s a bit longer. it still has some moderate taper shape to it. but that extended side cut does give it a little bit longer of a turn shape and allows for better edge contact from tip to tail and that results in overall smoother ride. so gain, what they do with he poplar wood car it does matter how they shape and profile it. with that extra material it is a pretty big ski. it does give that ski more strength and power because there is more material to it.

This is the 178 and it’s just a really nice well-rounded ski. You can see where that taper comes to here underfoot. The shovel has a nice even progressive flex throughout. They do something with sidewall as well. Full sidewall, underfoot, through the binding area and it does taper to a half sidewall construction. That’s going to increase the maneuverability and the quickness of the skis towards the ends while keeping the edge grip nice under foot. like you’d want to see with a bunch of fresh snow, the ski does have a good rocker profile to it as well, a nice extended rocker from the shovel here starting a little bit below the taper line, that gives you a nice smooth pop into the turn and jumps you up out of the snow. In the tail, same thing, just a little bit below below the taper. Kind of a moderate splay tp the twin tip. Really a well-rounded, wider body all mountain freeride ski from Black Crow. Definitely want to be in the advanced category here for this ski, but if you’re an intermediate looking for a wider ski for resort powder this would also be a great ski.

Völkl Blaze 106 W Video Review

Transcript – In front of me I have Volkl Blaze 106 women’s version. Same as the men’s just a different top sheet and sizes available. They came out with this excellent lightweight, all mountain freeride tour ski last year, and they’ve basically given it a little bit of a cosmetic difference this year. Construction wise, they use their hybrid multi-layered wood core. They use super light wood, and they also use a synthetic wood down the center, which you can actually see in the construction of the ski. It’s a little bit lighter. All it does is reduce the weight even more and holding that torsional stiffness you’ll need to have smoother ride.

Shape of the ski, they have a nice long tip rocker. Pretty long for this kind of category, and nice tail rocker. Combined with their 3D radius, basically what that’s going is help you do is get the ski on edge easily and help you maneuver easily through tricky situations. But you’re also going to be able flex he ski on edge and hold it. If you like to make larger turns. Their 3d radius technology is pretty awesome, it lets you make slalom turns, to GS turns, to Super G turns. Depending on how you flex the ski and how you power the ski. So if you like to be able to go just about anywhere on the mountain.

With a 106 waist you’re going to be able to hit some powder, get some flotation. But also with hat radius you’re going to be able to pop in the trees and maneuver easy and be able to pop in out and of moguls. Id’ gear this to a little bit more advanced lady, a high intermediate. with the 106 under waist it’s definitely geared towards someone who knows what they’re doing. Someone who wants a little more floatation in powder. It can also be used as a touring ski. Since it’s so light in its construction, without any metal in there. You’re going to be able to take it uphill without getting too fatigued. But you’re also going to be able to get that flotation for going downhill. They do have a narrower version for someone who is purely looking for resort uphill, but this ski is going to be great for someone who kinda likes to do it all.

K2 Mindbender 106C Alliance Video Review

Transcript – In front of me I have k2s Mindbender 106c Alliance, which is in their women’s Mindbender lineup. It’s the second to widest of their lineup and it’s in the middle of their carbon series. The 106 c stands for 106 underwaist and c is for carbon construction. In the construction you can see that they have a weave, I’m not sure if you can see it on the camera, but it is really cool and you can see in on the top sheet. They have a tighter weave that go through the tips and less of a weave in the tail. The reason for that is to allow better turn initiation on the tips, and grip in the front of the ski and allows you to release those tails when you need. With a 106 you’re going to be taking this ski into variable conditions, powder, crud, bumps, trees, and that weave is really going to help you get into the turn and release the turn and have some fun. They have a really fun top sheet, just like all their Mindbender skis. They try to be different from all the other brands out there.

For 106 underfoot you’re looking for a more advanced skier on this ski. It’s a power ski, it’s an all-mountain ski, it’s a backcountry. It’s not too heavy, you could put a touring binding on it and could go uphill and have some fun on it. It is really meant to be an all-mountain category. That lady that wants to hit the back bowls of vail with a couple inches, pop into the trees, wherever you want to go the 106 is going to take you there. The other version they have is their 90 c which is more of a frontside carving ski, but it still plays with the trees and bumps and snappy feel, where this one just gives you a little more width and a little more float when you hit the powder days. Imagine a kayak that weighs less than 8lbs, rolls up to the size of a large water bottle, can carry enough gear for almost any type of adventure and is very easy for even the most novice of paddler to learn to use. That’s a packraft for you. It can take you to amazing places all on its own or can help extend a huge number of other outdoor pursuits.

The biggest advantage of a packraft is right in the name. The packability of a packraft is simply amazing. Even at their largest, rafts like the Alpacka Forager that will carry two people and 1000lbs of gear, they pack down to the size of a couple of rolls of paper towels and weigh only 14 pounds. For the long distance hikers and bike packers, there is the Kokopelli Hornet-Lite weighing in at only 4.7 lbs. 

For such a lightweight and compact piece of equipment, you can carry almost anything you would need for any kind of adventure in any climate. Once inflated most packrafts are ready to carry anything from a basic day bag to your mountain bike lashed to the nose of the raft. For those out there looking to carry the gear for a multi-day trip, most packrafts offer a zipper option. This zipper allows you to open the tubes of the raft and load the gear you don’t need access to during the day inside of your boat. Not only does this allow you to carry a staggering amount of gear with you, but also increases the stability of the craft by lowering your center of gravity. 

Last, but certainly not least, is how user-friendly packrafts are. We have no experience in kayaks or canoes, but we have been able to paddle class III whitewater while loaded down with backpacking gear for two people for a two to three-night trip that would have been impossible on a standup paddle board. Packrafts like the Alpacka Gnarwhal, Valkyrie or the Kokopelli Nirvana are ready to take on class IV and up white water if the paddlers skills and nerves are up for it. That stability transfers over to flatwater paddling as well and first time paddlers will feel very comfortable in any kind of packraft paddling around their local pond, lake or reservoir.

As you can see the packraft offers amazing versatility in a multitude of situations. It has allowed us to explore places we would have otherwise been unable to go and even go deeper into the wilderness we have gone before.

Hoka Speedgoat 5 Women’s Review

Trail running has gained massive popularity over the years, and more people are venturing into the great outdoors to push their limits. Trail running comes with a unique set of challenges, including unpredictable terrain, and as such, it’s crucial to invest in the right gear, starting with the shoes. Among the most popular trail running shoes is the Hoka One One Speedgoat 5. These shoes have been around for some time, and the fifth iteration is a vast improvement over its predecessor. However, like with anything, it has its pros and cons.

The HOKA Speedgoat 5 holds a special place in the hearts of some trail runners who consider it their go-to shoe for running. However, others find the shoe’s underfoot feel to be uncomfortable and unwieldy. After I got used to the fit, I fell in love with the cushioning and grip it provided. While it may not be the most responsive shoe, I have enjoyed using it on a variety of trails after a brief period of adjustment.

In this review, we’ll take a closer look at the Hoka One One Women’s Speedgoat 5 trail running shoes, examining its new design, performance, comfort, style, and durability.

The Test

Over the past 10 years, I’ve slowly evolved from a summer hiker and mountain biker to an enthusiastic trail runner, bagging my first half-trail marathon in Summer 2022. It was a slow burn that started with an attraction to the convenience and simplicity of throwing on a pair of shoes and zooming out my door to the nearest Aspen, Colorado trail, which I am lucky enough to call home. I also appreciated the added bonus of providing my aging dogs with joint-healthy exercise.

As someone with a history of ski-racing-related knee issues, including an ACL replacement in 2010, I knew I was an ideal candidate to test the famously knee-friendly Hoka One One. In fact, I ended up spending the entire summer training for the Golden Leaf Half Marathon in the Hoka One One Speedgoat 5.

Design

The Speedgoat 5 by Hoka has undergone a complete overhaul, with the exception of the midsole. The changes are definitely for the better, offering enhanced fit and better grip, making it a go-to for all types of terrain.

The upper on the Speedgoat 5 has been completely redesigned, featuring a flared heel collar, multiple layers of jacquard mesh, and nearly zero overlays. The result is a shoe that’s both performance-ready and comfortable.

When it comes to fit, the Speedgoat 5 (for me) is a perfect match from heel to toe. The new mesh offers a perfect balance of stretch and structure, hugging the forefoot instead of cramming it into place, creating excellent lockdown. Even the elf-heel provides excellent comfort and security. The thin, gusseted, racer-style tongue lays perfectly on the foot, making it perfect for ultra-distance races and adventures.

But that’s not all; the Speedgoat 5 features a newly configured Vibram Megagrip outsole that trims weight and boosts grip. The lug depth remains at 5mm, but the pattern, lug type, and textured lugs provide the ultimate grip. Lugs of various sizes are clustered at the forefoot and perimeter of the midfoot and heel, creating more surface area for the lug to grab onto surfaces without sacrificing weight.

The midsole of the Speedgoat 5 is Hoka’s classic EVA-based foam with a higher stack (39.5mm to 35.5mm / 4mm drop) and meta-rocker that guides your foot to strike closer to midfoot and transition smoothly through toe-off. It offers ample underfoot protection while retaining some responsiveness, falling somewhere in the middle of Hoka’s Challenger and Salomon Ultra Glide.

Finally, the medial arch provides subtle support for those going longer. Even though I don’t typically seek support, I appreciated it on my longer training runs and on race day.

Performance

When it comes to performance, the Hoka One One Speedgoat 5 is a mixed bag. On the one hand, it offers exceptional traction through the Vibram Megagrip soles, which provide a secure grip on any terrain. On the other hand, it doesn’t score as highly as some of the more well-featured shoes in the market.

However, the thick base and sockliner upper of the Speedgoat 5 are among its best features. The stack height is 31mm, providing adequate protection to the sole of the foot, and the sockliner upper offers a comfortable fit. These features make the Speedgoat 5 an excellent choice for those who require enhanced cushioning and support while trail running.

Foot Protection

Trail running shoes need to provide adequate protection to the feet, given the unpredictability of the terrain. The Hoka One One Speedgoat 5 offers some great protective elements but lacks in some areas. The tightly woven, double-layer mesh upper does a great job of keeping sand from infiltrating but provides little protection against water. This lack of water resistance can be a significant drawback, especially in wet weather conditions. For me, in the dry Colorado Rockies, this wasn’t really an issue, but it could be less than ideal for ladies located who love to run in the PNW rainforests.

The heel cup is uniquely shaped, with some cushioning and a propensity to mold to your anatomy, keeping dirt particles out. The toe bumper is also a standout feature, providing ideal protection to the toes without feeling intrusive. However, the Speedgoat 5 lacks a rock plate, which is a significant drawback, given the design of the shoe. The absence of a rock plate makes the upper construction feel fairly minimalist, despite the maximalist design of the shoe. It’s worth noting that the outsole, stack height, and shape of the shoe compensate for the lack of a rock plate, but it’s still an area of improvement for future iterations.

Traction

Traction is one of the most crucial elements of trail running shoes. The Hoka One One Speedgoat 5 employs Vibram Megagrip rubber as its base, making it a highly trustworthy shoe no matter the terrain. The shoe even sticks to slippery granite with ease, thanks to the Vibram soles.

The updated sole design includes specified traction lugs and a burly 5mm deep lug pattern across the sole. These lugs make the shoe surefooted, providing excellent grip across varying inclines of loose scree. Even on descents, we felt strong and surefooted because of the great traction on the updated Speedgoat.

Sensitivity

No matter what type of terrain you’re running on, the Hoka Speedgoat 5 shoes offer minimal trail feel. While there was some sensation in our feet when running on the roughest of trails, such as those with rocks and scree, overall the sensation was significantly reduced.

These shoes don’t have a rock plate, but the deep and plush foam provides ample insulation between your feet and the ground. If you prioritize sensitivity over foot protection, the Saucony Peregrine 11 may be a better choice for you.

Heading back down after summiting, we can confidently say that we love wearing the Speedgoat. While they aren’t the most sensitive shoe, the amount of cushioning they provide really takes the stress off our joints during downhill runs.

Stability

When it comes to stability, the Hoka shoes aren’t the most stable compared to low-riding, zero-drop alternatives. However, given their 32mm tall underfoot platform, this is to be expected. Despite this, we find that the Speedgoat 5 is possibly the most stable Hoka shoe we’ve worn. It securely grips the foot and combines a wide landing platform with a low heel-toe drop. Over time, I’ve come to realize that it’s possible to adapt to anything you use frequently, and most Hoka users don’t have a big problem with stability. We only notice the lack of stability on steep, uneven terrain or when running on washed-out trails without a flat landing spot. On standard trails, even rocky ones, the added stack height isn’t a significant issue.

Comfort

I absolutely adore how comfortable the Hoka Speedgoat 5 trail running shoes are. Hoka listened to feedback from previous versions and widened the toe box slightly, though it still tapers to a point at the front. The heel also fits a bit narrower, providing better grip than previous models. Overall, the fit is excellent, and those with wider feet can opt for the wide version without needing to size up or down.

The upper construction quality is exceptional, with a seamless interior that doesn’t have any obvious rub points. The thin tongue doesn’t offer as much padding against the pressure of the laces, but I didn’t experience any discomfort from it. The only downside is that the shoe absorbs more water than the previous version and takes a bit longer to dry. This means it may not be the best choice for the wettest of daily runs, but it’s still a remarkably comfortable shoe.

Style

Some may disagree, but running shoes fall in that category of “style doesn’t matter.” This also goes for women’s backpacking and ski touring packs and many other products. Some may find the Speedgoat 5, as well as all Hoka One One products, to be unsightly because of their wide toe box and amply cushioned midsole. Durability

As the Speedgoat continues to shed weight with each iteration, there are naturally concerns about the long-term durability of the shoe. After putting the shoe through 165 miles of half-marathon training, I can confidently say that the changes Hoka has made to cut weight will likely not have a significant impact on its longevity for most people. The new midsole material has yet to show signs of packing out, the Vibram outsole is standing up well against abrasion, and the jacquard mesh upper is showing only minimal stretching. The Trek Fuel EX 9.8 GX, now on sale at $5,799, is the latest addition to the line-up of Trek Fuel EX bikes, renowned for their all-rounder unisex capabilities. This review will examine how the Fuel EX 9.8 GX performs compared to its pricier counterparts and whether the mid-level specification makes it a worthy choice.

Overview and Design

The Trek Fuel EX 9.8 GX features a sleek carbon frame with a semi-translucent red finish that highlights its visible carbon fibers. It comes with a 140mm travel FOX 36 Performance Elite fork, which provides adequate performance but does not match up to the high-end GRIP2 cartridge that comes with the top-spec model. The bike boasts 130mm of rear travel, and a FOX Performance Float Thru Shaft shock with Trek’s Thru Shaft technology, developed by RockShox, which reduces friction and enhances sensitivity.

The bike features a proprietary internal storage compartment in the downtube that offers enough room to store essentials such as a spare inner tube, a CO2 cartridge, and trail snacks. Additionally, a long TPU downtube guard protects the carbon frame from impacts and stray rocks. The chainstay protector dampens chain slap, keeping the ride quiet and ensuring a comfortable experience. The integrated Knock Block limits the steering angle, preventing the fork crown from damaging the frame or cables from tearing off. It is worth noting that hitting this limit on the trail is unlikely, but it could be problematic when transporting the bike.

For all other components, Trek relies on in-house Bontrager components, including a 170mm Line Elite dropper post and 780mm carbon bars.

The bike rolls on wide, puncture-prone 2.6” Bontrager XR4 Team Issue tires, which generate little traction and offer undefined handling. Given this limitation, we recommend upgrading to a narrower 2.4″ or 2.5” model with a more robust casing to enhance grip and improve the ride experience.

Performance

The Trek Fuel EX 9.8 GX weighs 29.13lbs making it reasonably light and nimble, particularly on ascents, where it generates a lot of traction and offers a high level of comfort. The bike delivers an impressive uphill performance, navigating all imaginable uphill situations with ease. As a first-timer on a 29er and smaller gal (5’3″), I found this bike to handle the uphill particularly well. My weight felt centered, but slightly forward, which helped me power up Cozyline Trail at Snowmass’ Sky Mountain Park, where I took the Fuel for it’s first spin.

On descents, the Trek Fuel EX 9.8 GX provides adequate performance, but the brakes and tires fall short of expectations. The SRAM G2 RS brakes provide sufficient stopping power, but the 180mm rear disc overheats on long descents (which I experienced on an Upper Plunge to Hummingbird in Aspen’s Hunter Creek Valley). The braking performance was a bit compromised. Similarly, the traction on the Bontrager XR4 Team Issue tires is a bit limited.
