Forbes.com acknowledges growth of women in action sports

Grete Eliassen, Forbes, women in actions sports

Forbes.com recently published an online piece acknowledging not only female athletes who are pushing the boundaries of action sports, but the increased participation in snowsports among women. We’re overjoyed that mainstream media is recognizing the growing power, influence and potential women have in the snowsports and action sports world.

In the article, Forbes interviewed snowboarders Kelly Clark and Elena Hight, boardercross athlete Lindsey Jacobellis and freeskier Grete Eliassen.

Here’s our favorite take-aways from the article:

“It used to be that male athletes were the primary innovators and participants in winter action sports. Then young girls started following their fathers and brothers to the slopes. Decades later, the once male-only industry now includes talented women who are world-renowned professional athletes.”

“FORBES: What are the opportunities to grow the market for women in action sports? What does the women’s side of the business of action sports need to maintain its sustainability and accessibility?

ClarkAt first glance, I would say women tend to shop more than men. And typically, women have most of the buying power in households. If women only represent 30% of the business in snowboarding, there is a huge opportunity to grow and capitalize on that market, and it starts by increasing participation.

Hight: Women are just starting to realize that action sports are something that they can participate in and the more that this knowledge and interest spreads, the larger the market will become; action sports just needs to continue to reach out to women and create opportunities and marketing strategies for them to feel engaged. In many ways, action sports are marketed mostly to men, because they are male dominated sports. The gap in this approach is that women respond to other women, not to men. I believe that in any avenue, especially sports, there needs to be specific marketing geared towards women.

Eliassen: The opportunities are huge! Companies need to start stepping it up and start creating women specific content. Oakley did a great job a couple years ago by producing a women’s specific action sport movie including skiing, surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding. Also, I had the chance to create a women’s freeski movie called Say My Name, which was one of the first ever women’s ski movies.

Jacobellis: You are always going to have that gap between men and women from an apparel or equipment marketing standpoint, but, just like you have seen with women’s tennis, there are opportunities for fashion brands, cosmetic brands, and other health and beauty brands to tap into this young market. ”

5-Day Raw Food Cleanse

raw food cleanse, raw food diet

When I used hear the word “cleanse” I tended to recoil. I’d picture myself of miserably wasting away for days on end, being constantly “hangry” and not having the energy to do the outdoor activities I love. Unsurprisingly, I wrote cleanses off for years. But being someone who follows a lot of health, wellness and yoga pages on Facebook the slow tirade of cleansing benefits articles eventually wore me down. I decided to do a raw food cleanse.

To me, as someone who easily bonks, a raw food cleanse seemed like the best bet for keeping my body nourished and healthy. Those weight-loss juice cleanses are way out of my reach. I’m a hungry girl by nature and there’s no way I’d last, or be a productive member of society, just drinking lemon juice and cayenne pepper for a week.

When I actually looked at all the food options available on a raw cleanse, I was pleasantly surprised. I could do this. And you can, too. Have a peek:

On the Listnuts raw food cleanse, nuts, nuts raw food diet

  • Vegetables: no baking, steaming or frying (you can have beans, but they must soak in water to soften before consumption).
  • Fruit: preferably in season (ie citrus and pears are currently).
  • Nuts & Seeds: unroasted, unsalted.
  • Honey: raw, locally produced and sweet.
  • Raw Apple Cider Vinegar: check out Bragg’s (good for making salad dressing)
  • Water: helps to keep you feeling full and hydrated.

Off The List

  • Meat
  • Dairy
  • Oil (unless it’s cold-pressed)
  • Caffeine
  • Sugar
  • Booze

Get ready to eat a lot of salads. But hey, it could be worse, you could be hangry and famished with nothing to comfort you but lemon juice and cayenne pepper.

Here’s one of my favorite raw salad recipes:

Fruit/Nut Saladavocado mango apple salad, raw salad recipe
Mixed Greens or Spinach
Almonds (or whatever nuts you have)
Mango
Apple
Red Onion
Avocado
Cherry Tomatoes

Salad Dressing:
2 teaspoons finely chopped, fresh ginger
Bragg’s Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
1 tablespoon Honey
Salt/pepper to taste

The toughest part for me was the caffeine. I did experience some headaches, but I worked through it and the I felt incredible afterwards.

Wax On Wax Off ~ How to Choose the Right Wax

0
Ski Snowboard Wax

wax snowboadWax is temperature/ humidity specific, so you need a different wax for warm spring slush than you would for a cold powder day with temperatures below freezing.

A few factors when considering what wax to choose:

  • snow temperature
  • air temperature
  • air humidity
  • wind exposure
  • sun exposure

Note: If you live in a dry climate, like Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana or Idaho, you can always add graphite wax to avoid static friction in dry snow.

Burton AK 2L Blade Jacket Review

Burton AK 2L Blade Women's Jacket, Burton Blade Jacket Womens

Whether you are choosing a jacket for fashion or function, there are as many options out there for outerwear as there are snowboarders on the slopes. As a boarder myself, I am always looking for what’s made for riders by riders. And Burton is always a top pick. This year the AK 2L Blade jacket rose to the top as my choice from their line this year.

The Burton Blade is high performance, technical, and extremely versatile, making it ideal for the backside or the front side of the mountain. The AK line is designed for the freestyle rider that is in need of not just lightweight performance, but also style. Burton seamlessly blended the function of GORE-TEX® fabric with a sleek cut and color to really make your style pop, with out bulking up.

I am always cold out there, but I tend to lean towards shells with layering options rather than a cumbersome coat with a lot of insulation, that will just hinder my movements (I hate feeling like the Michelin Man with all those layers). The fit is performance oriented, engineered to mimic the body’s natural flex while riding and hiking.

Unknown

The added bonus of  the Blade jacket is the contoured hood. Ever tried putting your hoodup and still be able to see down hill as you slide sideways on your board? Not easy, so Burton solved this by scalloping back the hood so you can see perfectly downhill while still fully protected by your hood. Personally I love the high collar with brushed tricot lining, a perfect way to take the edge off a biting wind, or for those days your forget a facemask.

And for the finishing touch, it is GORE-TEX, in Burton’s words, it is “as waterproof and breathable as it gets. Don’t forget your snorkel!”

Style: Top marks  are awarded for a sleek, stylish design and bright colors. I wear this jacket on and off the hill. +1

Unknown-1Design: This is trivial, but I wish it had a pass pocket. The Bladeis a backcountry jacket, but still want to wear it on the frontside, and I am terrible about misplacing my pass. I also find the powder skirt to be situated a little high on the waist, and I have a short torso. But despite this, the Blade makes up lost points in the contoured hood. – .8

Durability: Lifetime warranty on Burton AK products means this jacket should stand up tot the test of time. So far I have not noticed any durability issues other than getting it dirty after so many days of use. +1

Performance: Add together lightweight, versatile, breathable and waterproof and it equals a jacket that can stand up to all-weather conditions and its got enough room to layer up. +1

Comfort: Since this jacket is basically a shell, there in no bulky insulation. The Blade is sleek and comfortable. Easy to move in as your trek up or down the hill. +1

Detox Yoga Poses to start your New Year off on the right foot

Twisting Lunge for Detox

After a month of celebratory eating, January can be a good time to eat clean and move for detox.

One of the many great things about yoga, is that it is designed to assist your body in detox. Yoga is a technology that is based on purifying the body, creating a zeal for health in the body and a genuine desire for spiritual health. If we are on a journey in life, our body is the vehicle, yoga helps keep our vehicle in good working order. Any yoga you do will help to detoxify the body- some poses are more efficient at it than others.

Modified Twisting Lunge

In hatha yoga, a pattern of squeeze/work and release generally starts off the process. Certain poses are more powerful in their aid to detox and elimination. If the goal of a cleanse is to give the organs of elimination a break, poses that build some heat and squeeze and release the digestive track are great for supporting a cleanse.

I’ve chosen a twisting lunge (Parivrtta Parsvakonasana) for our Get Moving pose.

Twisting Lunge can either be performed with the knee up for more heat building or can be modified and practiced with the knee down for more support. For more alignment details and a short detoxifying yoga video, visit my website.

Nat Geo gives Pretty Faces, a women’s ski film, a shout-out

Pretty Faces, a women's ski movie, women's ski film, Lynsey Dyer, Ingrid Backstrom, Elyse Saugstad, Rachel Burks

We’re thrilled to see National Geographic covering yet another women’s adventure story. This time they’re featuring Pretty Faces—a Kickstarter all-women’s ski movie project headed up by pro-skier and co-founder of Shejumps.org Lynsey Dyer.

Dyer and fellow veteran pro ladies like Ingrid Backstrom, Elyse Saugstad and Rachel Burks, founder of Femalewolfpack.com, are teaming up to cast female backcountry skiers in a light that better represents their passion for skiing and raw, powerful talent. Dyer decided to start Pretty Faces to show the younger generation of women skiers that they can be themselves and enjoy skiing —they don’t have to be sexy or act like a guy.

“Consider that one out of three girls has an eating disorder.” says Dyer in the article, “Skiing gave me an outlet to get away from all that. I want to be able to give that back so that we can empower the next generation to fulfill their ultimate potential.”

Pretty Faces is still in the fundraising phase and requires $60,000 to be filmed, produced and edited. If you’d like to learn more about this project or support to this inspirational project, check out Pretty Faces Kickstarter page.

Little (grey) Riding Hood ~ Celtek Review

0

Everything is better with a hood. This is a personal preference, for my own closet, at least. Maybe if I had any kind of sewing ability I would have thought to add a hood to all my favorite tops. But instead Celtek came up with a better idea, the Charity. It is an acrylic knit scarf, facemask and hood all in one. Just add to any shirt and you have an “insta-hood.”

Not only is it fashionable, but the Celtek Charity hood is functional as well—it was designed to be a facemask too. It’s actually quite warm for those chilly days on the slopes. It is a nice layer around my neck and chin without beingCharity-grey-171x230 too bulky. It also protects the back of your neck, which is exposed below your helmet when you don’t have a hood on. And like all Celtek pieces, it has UV protection.

Celtek worked with their riders and friends to come up with this unique concept. The idea was to have apparel to wear around town and on the mountain, plus a fashionable hood that can seamlessly transition into something perfect to wear around town. And let’s be honest, in the morning when I am rushing out the door to get first chair, I am not usually thinking about where I will be when the lifts stop spinning. So I never remember to bring a change of clothes for après. And the added bonus of a hood is that it covers up my amazing “helmet hair” after a long day of riding.

Rating:
4.25 (out of 5)

Style: 5 It doesn’t get any more stylish than this. It is a fashion friendly piece, designed to look cool on the slopes well as out on the town. It is even designed to be make-up friendly. And bet of all it adds an “insta-hood” when you want it. +1

Design: The Charity hangs nicely around your neck, with the option to pull up the hood when it gets chilly out there.  I would like it to be wider in the shoulders, so it would lay a little flatter when I have it under my jacket. + .25

Durability: So far the Charity is holding up to the wear and tear that I put all my snowboarding gear through.  It has been crammed at the bottom of my boot bag, yet no snags, tears or wrinkles. +1

Performance: Celtek makes all theirs pieces with form and function in mind. The Charity is warm, with UV protection and breathable as a facemask. +1

Comfort: I was worried it would be itchy for a face mask, but it’s not. The Charity is soft and snuggly. +1
