Healthy Road Trippin’ Part 1: Healthy Road Trip Snacks

Healthy Road Trip Snacks

I recently had one of those weekends where I spent A LOT of time in the car. First driving to the beach, then a back country roads tour to a friend’s engagement party and today a jaunt to the river for a yoga and kayaking adventure.

Being a weekend warrior can be totally fun, but all the driving can definitely take it’s toll on your healthy lifestyle. With a little bit of planning, you can upgrade your usual road food and less than good habits. Today we’ll talk about some yummy and healthy road trip snacks, and my next post I’ll share my favorite post long car ride yoga poses.

road trip, spring road trip, life on the road

Most of us tend to turn to snack food and coffee on the road during a long car ride because we’re needing some energy. When I recently stopped at a gas station for some provisions, I was totally disappointed while reading labels of trail mixes that we’re supposed to be healthy. Many were laden with corn syrup or other scary things.

Here are my favorite handy and healthy road trip snacks to keep me going mile after mile.

Bring a box or bag of salad greens. Greens are very energizing and since it’s almost impossible to pull over and find a road side smoothie stand, your can eat salad by the handful with pre-washed organic greens. Just make sure not to over-buy since you don’t want it to get hot and wilt in your car. If you’re bringing a cooler, keep them there.

Crunchy keeps me going, how ‘bout you? When I’m tired, crunchy wakes me up, instead of carb-y pretzels or chips, I reach for carrot sticks, apples, celery or raw broccoli.

Upgrade coffee with kombucha. Kombucha is slightly caffeinated and it’s carbonated tangy-ness can really revitalize. Since I brew my own, the last time I went to buy it in a store I was sticker shocked! If you love kombucha, consider brewing it yourself. For the price of one bottle in a store, you can brew more than 10 times as much. It’s fun and simple and I’m happy to help so let me know if I can help.

Make your own snack mix. I fulfill my sweet and salty cravings with my own mix. I add popcorn popped in coconut oil, raw cacao nibs, dried cranberries, and cashews. To keep your calories in check, use more popcorn and less nuts. Keep in mind, a shot glass full of nuts is one serving.

Are you a salty snacker? Have you tried dulse? Many women become iodine deficient, which has shown to be related to thyroid issues. If you are eating sea salt you’re not getting iodine in your diet, seaweed is a really great source. I get mine shipped from Ironbound Island. The ladies at the post office love me when I pick it up since it fills the office with it’s salty low tide smell.

Tell me where you’ve been this weekend and what got you through your road trip. Next I’ll be sharing my favorite counter poses to long car rides.

Get out there and get it ladies!

Summer Salad Recipe

1

Most of us do not enjoy eating big, heavy warm meals in the dead heat of summer. We save the chili and pastas for the winter time. But, eating a typical salad with lettuce, vegetables and dressing can get old fast. Enter the “Not your typical summer salad recipe.” Just like creating an average salad with lettuce, you can add anything you like to these summer salad, but for added nutritional value, it helps to use these ingredients as a guide:

  1. Beans. Loaded with protein and fiber, these will keep you full without overly filling you up.
  2. Seeds. Sunflower, sesame or—my favorite—hemp. They are chock full of vitamins, protein and healthy fats.
  3. Alternative dressings. Put away the mayonnaise  ranch and blue cheese. Instead opt for dressings such as avocado, lemon, apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar or just add some fresh herbs and lime juice.
  4. Healthy grains. Quinoa and millet are my favorites, but feel free to experiment with others.
  5. Veggies. Even though these are not traditional salads, don’t be afraid to add in any vegetables. Fresh from the garden or farmer’s market are best.

Here is my favorite salad thus far this summer:

Chickpea Avocado

Ingredients:

1 can of garbanzo beans

1/2 cup of hemp seeds

2 tbs of apple cider vinegar

1 tbs of olive oil

1 avocado

Half a head of red cabbage

1/2 lemon

1/2 cup of millet

1 cup of parsley

Directions:

In a medium saucepan, heat 1 cup of water. Add 1/2 cup of millet. Cover and simmer until millet is soft and all the water is absorbed.

While that is cooking, chop cabbage and parsley and half and dice the avocado. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and stir together. Let the salad chill in the refrigerator for a couple of hours.

It’s that easy! Not only do these salads work well to bring to any barbecue, but the high protein and high fiber makes them great fuel for you pre- or post-workout—preferably those  outdoor pursuits that let us enjoy the sunshine of summer!

How to Choose a Rock Climbing Harness

0

rock climbing harnessThe rock climbing harness is extremely vital because it connects the climber with his or her rope. Buying a harness is much more than walking into an adventure equipment store and picking up any top-quality harness. Here are some important tips on how to choose a rock climbing harness:

Different Types of Harnesses

  1. Crag or all-round harnesses are recommended for beginners as they function efficiently in different climbing applications such as gym climbing and top roping. These harnesses are equipped with padded leg loops and waist belts and are therefore very comfortable. Detachable leg loops on these harnesses allow climbers to answer the call of nature without untying themselves from the climbing rope. They are also equipped with a front loop that can be used to attach a rappel device.
  2. Alpine harnesses are constructed for mountain climbing. These have to be very light in weight and bulk, and therefore are equipped with nominal padding. They are made using non-absorbent material to ensure that the harnesses can stand mountain or glacier weather conditions. Their waist belt is very adjustable and their detachable leg loops allow climbers to change clothes or answer nature’s call with the rope tied to their waist.
  3. Big wall climbing requires special harnesses that can withstand multiple-pitch and multiple-day climbing. Such harnesses are well-padded around the waistbelt and leg loops to make hanging more comfortable. They also feature gear racking to make the shoulder gear sling seem lighter. A strong haul loop at their back allows climbers to easily tow ropes or heavy bags.
  4. Climbers who participate in competitions like Speed Events can choose harnesses designed for competitive events. Such harnesses are slim and their webbing allows climbers to move freely. Padding and frills are limited.

Factors To Be Considered Before Buying A Climbing Harness

After determining the type of harness that will work for you, here are some factors you should consider before making a purchase:

  1. The fit characteristics of harnesses for women and children are different from those for men.
  2. Harnesses come in different styles – the Diaper harness is made using flat webbing and a buckled waistbelt with adjustable leg loops, which allow climbers to wear it over different types of clothing; full-body harnesses are meant for children or adults with narrow waists; chest harnesses are worn on climbs in which the climber is at risk of falling on his head.
  3. If the harness fits tight, it will restrict the climber’s movement or pinch him; if it is loose, it could let go all of a sudden and cause the climber to fall.
  4. The waistbelt should fit comfortably just above the hip bone. It should not restrict the breathing.
  5. Climbers should be able to double-back their leg loop’s webbing straps through the buckles and still have 2 inches of strap left.
  6. The harness must be tied strictly as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
  7. A harness lasts up to two years depending on usage. It should be immediately replaced if the climber feels it has weakened.

These tips should help you choose an appropriate harness for when rock climbing.

Book Review: Still Points North by Leigh Newman

Still Points North, Leigh Newman, Still Points North Review

This is Women’s Gear Guide first book review, so go easy on me. I came across Still Points North by Leigh Newman when looking for some fresh fodder to share with you all, so naturally I googled “outdoor women’s books.” The author, Leigh Newman, who’s kind of a big deal (deputy editor at Oprah.com, an editor-at-large for an indie publishing house and a prolific travel and lifestyle writer) was kind enough to send me this book a couple of months back for a review. As soon as I started turning the pages of Still Points North, a memoir of Newman’s childhood in Alaska and transition into adulthood, I couldn’t stop. I’ll get into more detail about my thoughts on the book further down, but first check out this run down of the book so you know what I’m talking about.

Still Points North by Leigh Newman Still Points North, Leigh Newman, Still Points North Review
Part adventure story, part love story, part homecoming, Still Points North is a page-turning memoir that explores the extremes of belonging and exile, and the difference between how to survive and knowing how to truly live.

Navigating the fraught terrain of her family’s unraveling, Newman did what any outdoorsman would do: She adapted. With her father she fished remote rivers, hunted caribou, and packed her own shotgun shells. With her mother she memorized the names of antique furniture, composed proper bread-and-butter notes, and studied Latin poetry at a private girl’s school. Charting her way through these two very different worlds, Newman learned to never get attached to people or places, and to leave others before they left her. As an adult, she explored the most distant reaches of the globe as a travel writer, yet had difficulty navigating the far more foreign landscape of love and marriage.

Women’s Gear Guide Review
The first half of the book is almost entirely devoted to Leigh’s experience as a young child from the first summer in Alaska with her father after her parents divorced. She writes with the clarity (or lack thereof) of her seven-year-old mind, and its astonishing how she can really make you see change, heartbreak and family ties through the eyes of child. She learns to gut fish, navigate dangerous rivers, hunt and even co-pilot a plane, at a very young age, and shares her sometimes quick or delayed learning process, and even describes gutting a fish as a child doing house chores would, with utter boredom. That first summer after the divorce is a survival story for her, essentially. When visiting her father she is expected—and generally enjoys the responsibility—to assist her father’s fishing, hunting and flying expeditions. She must adapt her skills and perspective when with her father to please him, and subdue her feelings and opinions from her mother in Baltimore, to avoid hurting her. She learns to survive in the wilderness and in suburbia, all while navigating her duties to her parents. As an adult she’s an expert at jumping in and out of jobs, writing assignments and even cities. She ultimately ends up in New York and meets the perfect man. And realizes she isn’t so great at settling down and opening up. It’s almost painful to read at times, watching her take steps forward and five steps back, and then two more back even further. I was cheering her on, and then several pages later I’d be shaking my my head at her. She often sabotages herself, confusing independence as a means to an end. Leigh Newman depicts her own  modern survival story, and its an all-too familiar story for any outdoor-saavy “I can hang with the boys” sort of a gal, or anyone who has turned inwards for comfort only to find that life is better traveled with others.

Patagonia Women's Re-Tool Pullover

We’ve reviewed a couple other fleeces and do-all jackets on Women’s Gear Guide, but you can never have too many fleeces, right? I’m personally a huge fan of Patagonia, for a lot of reasons, one, they make great products that last a lifetime, two, if they happen to get damaged Patagonia offers a lifetime warranty, and, three they are actively involved in environment and conservation initiatives via two key programs: Common Threads and 1% for the Plant.

You’re bound to see it worn around active, outdoor-oriented towns, on trails, camping and skiing or snowboarding—if you haven’t already. And there’s good reason this piece is so popular, it’s the do-all be everything fleece, layer and jacket. The women’s version of the fleece features a flattering, feminine cut thanks to “princess and yoke” seamming, and comes to about hip length, which is a great features for women—like me who get cold backsides in the winter months. Style-wise, I loved how some of the color options offered pockets with different colors, i.e. grey body with a purple pocket and trim (absolutely adorable).

Other great features:

  • Kangaroo handwarmer pockets (another plus for ladies who get cold hands).
  • Brushed polyester microfleece trim on cuffs and hem.

Green Juice Recipe

Green Juice Recipe, Green Juice, Raw Juice, Homemade Juice, Kale Juice, Kale Smoothie

I decided to go on a raw food cleanse a couple weeks back. I know, know. I’ll share the deets soon, I promise. But I decided sharing this green juice recipe may be more useful information than me bemoaning how I couldn’t have coffee and half and half for five days. The nice thing about this recipe is that it doesn’t require a juicer. So, without further ado, Leah’s Green Juice Recipe (yes, it’s raw, vegan and gluten-free):

Ingredients
1/2 L of coconut water (NOT coconut milk)
1/3-1/2 bushel kale
1 small handful spinach
1 mango
1 apple
2 kiwi
1 large carrot (or 5 baby carrots) chopped
1 nectarine or 1 peach
1/2 Tbs fresh chopped ginger
1-1 1/2 Tbs honey

Directions
Throw all the ingredients in, except the coconut water. If the contents are spilling over the top of blender, just push everything down. It should be cozy in there. Add the coconut water, it should be about 2/3 full of liquid. If it isn’t add more. If it’s over that, don’t worry, it’ll only make blending time quicker. Mix in a blender. Refrigerate. Enjoy.

Red Ants Pants Review, Red Pants Ants

How convenient? Red Ants Pants thought of everything.

They come in two options straight cut or curvy cut. For me the curvy cut was just what I had been looking for in pants. I was also happy to discover these pants were made in the U.S., specifically out of a small ranching town in Montana. The concept for women’s work pants that fit has been something working women of the West have struggled with since the gold rush, and Red Ants Pants hit the hammer on the nail (no pun intended…okay, fine it was intended).

The Test:
From working at a desk to working in the yard, these pants are tough. Similar in style to most work pants they go above and beyond with standard sizing and by offering a straight or curvy cut. If I
