Zeal Optics Goggle Review ~ Voyager

1

The Overview:
Zeal Optics has come into its own in the last two years. After being purchased by Maui Jim, the company took a hard right, entirely changing it’s marketing plan. While Zeal still makes high-performance optics, as it has for many years prior to buyout, the company is now targeting adventurous and style-conscious young adults. And they are certainly hitting the mark. The Native American-print straps of the Voyager goggles are particularly appealing to young women on the edge of trend.

photo-8The Test: I took these goggles out for the first time to Aspen Highlands. It was a partly sunny day, so I kept the Pheonix Mirror (pictured left) lens in, rather than switching out to the blue low-light lens. I found these goggles to be extremely comfortable, plus they fit well with my helmet. Although these goggles are technically “unisex” I found that despite being on the slightly large size, they still fit snuggly on my face with no air cracks. I also really liked that these goggles are rimless, as it widened my field of vision.

The Pheonix Mirror lens is great for every day or variable sun, as they allow for enough depth of vision during periods of flat light and also shade against glaring sunlight. I tinkered a bit to see how difficult the lenses were to remove and found that they’re quite easy to pop out, but a little more difficult to put back in. (You have to slide the lens into the nose piece first, followed by the side swivel tabs. The tabs only spin in one direction, also).

I tested the Voyager’s anti-fog worthiness on Highlands Bowl. I kept the goggles on throughout the sweaty hike to the summit. I found that there was no lingering fog. If I breathed heavily, I would experience a quick blast, but it was almost immediately dissipated. I have to give my stamp of approval, these goggles are indeed top-notch in the performance department.

Rating
4.5 (out of 5)

Style: While style is subjective, we personally love the hip, trendy Native prints on the google straps, and the larger freeride-esque frame size. +1
Design: The rimless frame is a winning aspect of these goggles, yet smaller women, with smaller faces may have trouble wearing the Voyager.  However, this is a unisex goggle, so we must accept the happy medium. So, minimal points deducted. -.25
Durability: As a standard, most goggles have some sort of impact protection, and some are more successful than others. No scratches or cracks have been assessed, despite tight tree skiing and a couple tumbles. +1
Performance: Clear, wide field of vision, excellent anti-fog capabilities and seemingly good scratch resistance, makes these goggles a top performer! +1
Comfort: While these goggles were quite comfortable on my face—I wear a medium-sized helmet and have a pronounced nose—they will seem larger on petite-faced/headed women. Again, this is a unisex google, so we must meet in the middle, minimal points deducted. -.25

Patagonia Capilene 4 Expedition Weight Baselayer Review

0
Patagonia Capilene 4, Patagonia Expedition Weight, Patagonia Capilene 4 Polartec

The Overview:
Getting the heart pumping during the winter isn’t always easy. Cold weather and snow can put a damper on your ability to get the exercise you need. Your gear can also affect your ability to enjoy the winter months. Too few layers or permeable fabrics will cause the body to get cold faster, burning up more calories and tiring you out quicker. Too many layers, or hyper insulated fabrics will cause  you to sweat too much, and if that moisture has nowhere to go, ie wicking fabric, then eventually that moisture will cool down, chilling your body. There’s obviously a fine line between insulation and breathability, and some fabrics walk that line better than others.

Patagonia’s Capilene  baselayers—which features a grid-like fabric provides next to skin warmth and breathability—got an update this year, specifically in the moisture-wicking department with Polartec Power Dry High Efficiency fabric. This secret to Polartec’s superior wicking performance is their use of different yarns on either side of the fabric, which creates two different surfaces. The next to skin surface moves moisture from the body, while the outer surface is designed to dry quickly.

The Test
Colorado recently experienced a two-week long cold snap. I’m talking single digits or low teens during the day. It was cold; the perfect time to get my cold-weather cardio on and see if the Patagonia Capilene 4 Expedition Weight hoody and bottoms were all they were cracked up to be. So, I headed to Aspen Highlands Bowl. The hike is generally 35-45 minutes for me, and always a sweaty affair since it’s a mostly steep, sustained climb. Although I certainly sweated all the way up, regardless of the cold temperatures, I noticed didn’t get the usual chill once I stopped moving at the summit. Post bowl-lap I didn’t have to go in to warm up because of wet, cold layers.

Hoody
The longer length in the back of the garment prevented me from getting cold chairlift butt. And the scuba diver-like hoody was a welcomed extra layer, which fit comfortably under my helmet. The hoody’s breast pocket is nice for holding chapstick or other essentials on warmer days, and located in such a place that even bibs won’t block access to. Thumb holes ensure that there is no bunching, which is a nice feature.

Bottoms
I generally wear shell pants, so on cold days I have to wear two base layer bottoms to keep my tush warm. To test the “Cap 4’s” mettle, I  wore it alone, regardless of the chilly temps. It did what it was supposed to do. My lower half was warm the whole time. I found the wide, yoga-pant like waistband to be exceedingly comfortable. My only complaint was that I found the ankle cuffs to be a bit constricting on my calves—and I’m petite—especially considering they are generally folded up to accommodate ski boots.

Rating
4.75 (out of 5)

Design: The longer hem in the back of the hoody to prevent cold butt and bunching (if you’re ice climbing) makes this a real winner. + 1
Style: The color options and fit is quite flattering for a high-performance baselayer, you’ll definitely want to sport this in the bar for apres hour. +1
Durability: Cap 4 fabric includes a fabric treatment that uses molecular “spears” to puncture the cellular walls of bacteria that causes sweat to stink. +1
Performance: Warm, breathable, moisture-wicking…need I say more? +1
Comfort: The Cap 4 fabric is soft on the skin and lightweight, plus the bottom’s wide, elastic waistband will fit all body types nicely. However, points are docked for the bottom’s restraining ankle cuff. -.25

*Bonus: Made with recycled polyester for all you beautiful conscious people out there. Plus, “since spring 2007, Capilene fabrics have included old Capilene garments (recycled into virgin-grade polyester) collected through Patagonia’s Common Threads Initiative Recycling Program.”

*Innovation: Polartec’s double surface fabric is truly unique.

Vapur Element ~ The Anti-Water Bottle

0

Overview:
We’ve all been there: do I bring a water bottle or a Camelbak? Certain water bottles and hydration systems are ideal for certain activities. Hydration systems are not ideal for most cold weather activities because the exposed hose will freeze, cutting off your supply too much needed water. And then there are other times:  you’re shredding inbounds or perhaps on a quick mountain bike ride and  you don’t want to lug around a large pack of water. You need something quick, easy and portable that can address a variety of activities in a variety of conditions. The Vapur Anti-Water Bottle—a compressible plastic bladder made to roll up for convenient storage when empty—is the answer for hydration woes.

The Test:
I simply rolled up the empty Vapur Element and secured it with the plastic carabiner and slid the 1L container into my outerwear pant pocket and headed to Aspen Mountain for some early season runs. When I became thirsty I popped into the SunDeck lodge, screwed off the cap and filled the Vapur with water. Instead of taking my usual couple gulps from a water fountain, I was able to drink the full liter. I filled up again at the bottom of the mountain and enjoyed refreshment on the gondola ride up. I stayed well hydrated all day, which is especially important during winter months in the Rockies. Plus, I was well prepared for a proper apres session.

*Innovation: Vapur addresses an all too common problem of a bulky water bottle or exposed hydration hose. +1

*Price Point: For the convenience of the Vapur Element, $12 is peanuts!

Women’s Flannel Jacket Review ~ Orage Blueberry Flannel

0

By Megan Davin

The Overview: Love all of the dudes quilted flannel jackets but looking for a women’s specific one that gives some shape and flare? Look no further than Orage Blueberry Flannel. This is something I’ve been searching for a while. It’s rare to come across a functional women’s flannel that doesn’t look like you grabbed it from your boyfriend’s closet.

orage women's blueberry flannel review

The Test: This piece can be a casual around town jacket, a mid- layer on the mountain or the main accent piece of an outfit. It’s the do all jacket with style. The flannel is soft and the quilted nylon is not cold against the skin. I’m 5’4” and generally wear a medium and it fits perfectly, not too loose, but not too tight.

The one thing I wish it had were two side pockets because unless your rockin’ plastic or cash, a cellphone or car keys in the chest pockets make the pockets bulge and give the appearance of strangely shaped nipples. Not good. But it is super comfortable and available in fun colors! I have worn it as a mid-layer skiing, to the bar, to my job…you get the picture. This jacket has gone everywhere with me and I have only had it a month! Its cozy quilted lining keeps you warm, while a DWR coating offers light weatherproofing for a full multi-purpose piece.

Design: Designed for women but with a comfortable relaxed fit It is missing side pockets.– .25
Style: If you love plaid this is the piece for you. +1
Durability: So far so good. It is well made and stands up to dog paws jumping on it! +1
Performance: It has kept me warm and I have not gotten wet in a light drizzle. +1
Comfort: I want to wear this all the time. +1

Oakley Women Pants ~ Speed Burst Tight Review

0

The Overview:
There’s a lot to consider when selecting active tights. Will these be warm enough on cold runs or bike rides? Will the seat slowly wear out to the point that my butt cheeks can be seen? Are these breathable enough that I can wear them on a warmer day without sweating my tata’s off? And most importantly will these give me the dreaded muffin top effect? But in all seriousness, these are true concerns.

Oakley women's pants, women's running pants,

The Test:
When I initially put the Oakley Speed Burst Tight on, I noted that they felt supportive. The Lycra material added structure to the tights, yet also allowed for a free range of movement thanks to the four-way stretch construction. I liked the feeling along my knees, it reminded me of an understated neoprene knee sleeve. They were however several inches too long. I’m 5’3″ and the average female height is around 5’4″.

I wore the Oakley Speed Burst Tight on a cold-weather run at my usual aerobic haunt: Smuggler Mountain. If it’s not snowing in Colorado it’s almost always warm since the sun is so intense. Shade is another story though. The Speed Burst Tight performed excellently in the breathable-to-warm department as I ran from beating sunlight to shade. I did sweat—quite a lot— but I never experienced doused, dripping sweat thanks to the Speed Burst’s wicking capabilities.

Other great features included the wide, comfortable waistband which snuggly hugged, but did not pinch-off the muffin top zone. Flatlock seams prevent chaffing. Plus, there’s a small hidden zip pocket in the back of the tights, which are perfect for keys and even credit cards or ID’s in case you ever require a post-bike/workout beer.

Rating
4.25 (out of 5)

Design: Although I really like the supportive, elastic feel of the Lycra. These pants were two to three inches too long for the average female height. -.75
Style: Tights, are tights and they may not look amazing on every body type, but the seam construction and supportive materials maintain the structure of the pants. +1
Durability: Lycra was made to stretch and retain structure, so these pants have a long, stretchy life ahead of them. Plus antibacterial action prevent odor buildup. +1
Performance: Wicking fabric combined with active stretch make these ideal cold-weather running/biking pants. +1
Comfort: Wide waistband combined with flatlock stitching earns these pants top points. +1

Outdoor Research Centrifuge Jacket

0

The Overview:
In the past, standard fleece jackets have tended to be bulky and cumbersome, not an ideal layer for backcountry excursions or quick touring adventures. But there are some benefits: fleece material is a great fabric for the demands of winter aerobic activity, it’s warm, yet breathable, and dries quickly. However, it’s quite permeable to wind. Outdoor Research Centrifuge Jacket was engineered to address these issues, and address them excellently it does.

The Test:
Since the Colorado Rockies are extremely dry, nights are always signficantly cooler. So early morning runs in mid-November—especially in the shade—aren’t exactly pleasant. Unless of course you’re wearing the right gear. I found the Centrifuge Jacket to be perfect for early-morning cold-weather areobic activity, which in this case was my usual run up Smuggler Mountain in Aspen, Colo.

The hard-faced fleece on the chest and front torso protected against wind and kept warmth in, which was great during my shady ascent. By the time I hiked back down the mountain, the sun was shining brightly and warmly, so the highly air-permeable fleece on the back, side, underarms and face panel prevented overheating and the need to shed the jacket. Plus the the close-fitting balaclava-style hood eliminated my need for a hat, which I also wouldn’t have required for the warmer descent.

Rating
4.75 (out of 5)

Design: With differing front and back fabric designs, I’d say this gets top points, however I found the front zip to be a extremely small and difficult to grab with gloves on or with cold, numb hands. -25
Style: I particularly like the pink and maroon (zin/trillium) color combo, it also comes in blue and black. Plus the actual cut of the jacket is flattering on the female body. +1
Durability: The weather-resistant hard-face front fabric holds wind and weather at bay, and flatlock stitching ensures this jacket will be around for years to come. +1
Performance: With two fabrics for two types of performance, the Centrifuge embodies this category. +1
Comfort: Both fleece fabrics are comfortable next to skin and the expert stitching prevents any uncomfortable snag points. +1

Lowa Renegade GTX Mid Review

0

By Barbara Platts

The Overview: The Lowa Renegade has a reputation for being dependent and versatile in different situations. When I went on a desperate and hurried search for a pair of hiking boots for my Kilimanjaro climb, I knew I would have to find a pair that would perform well in the numerous climate zones I would be facing along my trek.

women's hiking boots, Lowa Renegade

The Test: I’ve been a minimalist fan when it comes to shoes for years. But I recognized that I would have to get something more durable for my hike up Africa’s highest peak. Still, I was skeptical to buy a pair of clunky hiking boots for my journey when I had grown used to scaling trails in my Five Fingers. My skepticism caused me to stall on purchasing a pair of boots until about two weeks before the climb. I finally decided on the Lowa Renegades because they felt the most comfortable in the store.

The Renegades turned out to be the perfect choice for my situation. They come ready to hike in, so my last minute buy did not leave me worried about having to break them in. They renewed my faith in a thicker soled shoe due to their PU Monowrap midsole, which makes them lightweight (less than a pound each) while still providing adequate support.

During the six days on the mountain, these boots became one of my favorite pieces of gear. I often even chose to wear them around camp instead of my tennis shoes because I found them so comfortable. I now have a renewed faith in a thicker shoe and look forward to many more adventures with these hiking boots supporting me from the ground up.

Cons: Since the boots are leather, your feet can get rather toasty inside of them on warmer days. The Renegades are not made out of full pieces of leather though, making them more breathable than some of the heavy-duty leather boots available.

Rating
5 (out of 5)

Design: These boots are well thought out from the lining to the sole, providing a light and comfortable experience while also keeping the foot safe and protected on rough terrain. +1
Style: A boot with a simple and classic look. They are not particularly flashy, but they wear dirt well. The Renegades are available in eleven different colors.  +1
Durability: Derby style lacing helps hold the fit over a long day or week. And the Nubuk leather maintains the boots shape over time as well. +1
Performance: The Vibram Evo sole allows for a steady grip on rocks and scree. The waterproof lining and the leather allow for good performance in any weather. +1
Comfort: The Renegades were non-evasive due to their seamless, waterproof GORE-TEX lining. I left the mountain blister-free ready to wear the boots the next day. +1
