Review: Jones Hovercraft Snowboard Women’s

0
Jordan Curet snowboarding

Jeremy Jones creates boards that he rides in the steepest and deepest terrain on Earth. The Jones Hovercraft Snowboard Women’s is a work of art in the snowboard world. It is a uniquely shaped powder board with a light and snappy bamboo top sheet. The blunted nose and swallow tail offer the best powder turns you can dream of, but the Hovercraft also performs up to par on almost every other terrain. If I had to ride one board everyday, in every type of snow, this would be the one.

At first glance this board looks like a throwback to the old school snowboards of the 80s, but on closer inspection it has all the modern shapes, materials, and technologies to ride on any terrain.

The Hovercraft is aptly named as it literally sits above the snow. This board floats perfectly above the deepest powder, this board was built for bottomless days. The rocker in the blunted nose improves maneuverability and directional rocker with camber underfoot makes edge hold and response truly impressive.

While Hovercraft seems to float, that doesn’t mean it isn’t fast, it can rip down any degree slope from trees to wide open chutes. The shape doesn’t sacrifice anything in tight terrain, able to make quick jump turns, fast course corrections and tight slaloms when you need to.

The Hovercraft has unique feel for such a short board, riding more like a surfboard than another snowboard I have tried. For along time this board was the powder board in my quiver- saving it for the deepest of powder days. But I have recently taken to riding it on a daily basis. The Hovercraft performs just as well on groomers and ice as it does in the powder.

The set back camber allows for you to really lay into a carve, and make soul turns down the slope. The progressive sidecut makes for smoother turn initiation and transition.

Even the best of resort powder runs put you back on the groomers at the end. And unlike some other powder specific boards that can’t do a thing on groomers, the Hovercraft can handle chatter and chunder. Just like in the powder the nose pops right over all the uneven terrain, and the edge hold allows for tight turns and clean carving. In addition the base is fast and can hold it’s speed through flat powder sections or down long cat tracks.

The hybrid flex pattern might be the secret ingredient that makes this board great in every condition the mountain can throw at you- tip rocker then tail rocker and camber between the bindings.

Though the swallow shape would make you think going backward was a bad idea, there is just enough rocker in the tail to allow you to ride switch. Though I wouldn’t trust myself for long at high speeds without a proper tail.

The texture of the beautiful bamboo topsheet negates any need for a stomp pad. I would have been torn about sticking something to the easily scratch wood surface, but there is enough grain that it sticks to your snowboard boots, making one-footing no problem at all.

If you like this board, be on the lookout for the Ultracraft Split, carbon splitboard version of the Hovercraft.

Our favorite women’s ski edits of 2015

0

It’s no secret that there’s plenty of rippin’ gals out there that can keep up with the boys, but these ladies are in a class of their own. Looking back at 2015, here are the women’s ski segments and edits that made our jaws drop.

Angel Collinson, of Snowbird, Utah

Many people are saying Angel Collinson sent one of the rowdiest female lines caught on film to date in TGR’s Paradise Waits and we have to agree. The always technical, fast Collinson slays Alaskan spines few would dare to ski.

Tatum Monod, of Banff, Alberta

This backcountry backflippin’ babe has done it again. Showcasing smooth, stylish skiing and comfort in the air, Tatum’s skills put her on par with the best of the boys.

Lexi Dupont, of Sun Valley, Idaho

We love Lexi’s #WhySoSerious edit for it’s light-hearted vibe and impressive, pucker-worthy lines. We also love that she dusts herself off like a champ after a gnarly crash.

Roundup: Top Colorado Whitewater Parks

0

pumphouseMany of the mountain towns in Colorado developed around rivers as sources of fresh water. Today those rivers are being transformed into surfable whitewater playgrounds. A whitewater park is essentially a stretch of river that has been altered to create a series of drops and pools that are fun to float with a kayak, canoe, standup paddleboard (SUP), or some just in a tube. In celebration of these watering holes for river junkies, white water festivals have sprung up across the state.

Buena Vista Whitewater Park

In Buena Vista, just over Independence Pass, the white water park runs along the Arkansas River in downtown, from East Main Street to the South Main District. Main Street essentially dead-ends at the river, just a few blocks beyond the business district. With park just above the banks of the water it is a great gathering space, with vantages of all the waves for spectators to watch river-goers. In this stretch of the Arkansas, the river has five whitewater structures that attract to a wide assortment of abilities, from easy play waves and surf waves to an advanced freestyle hole. The bike path stretches the length of the run, making it perfect place to walk back up for another practice run.

buena vista

There are two water festivals in Buena Vista- CKS PaddleFest and King and Queen of the Wave, each with competitions and clinics for watercraft of all kinds.

Salida Whitewater Park

A few miles further down the Arkansas River is the Salida whitewater Park, which runs a quarter mile right through the center of town. There are four feature- two holes and two waves. The community has really clustered around the river revival- with restaurants and businesses springing up along the shore. My favorite is the Boathouse, which extends out over the water, with its tables overlooking Boat Hole so diners can watch, and even cheer for floaters.salida

River events not to miss are the SalidaSUP Sesh and FibARK. FibARK boasts to be “America’s Oldest and Boldest Whitewater Festival.” This year marked the 64th year of the downriver race, through some truly daunting rapids. There is something for everyone though, with a raft rodeo, hooligan race, freestyle kayak, and even a river dog event.

Montrose Whitewater Park

Hop, skip and a jump over to Montrose will take you to one of the largest whitewater parks in the state, and also the newest, having just opened this past May. The park runs 1,000 feet of the Uncompaghre River and includes six diverse whitewater features, dropping 11 feet over a quarter mile.

To kick off the first summer, Montrose hosted the FUNC (Fun on the Uncompaghre) Festival for kayaks and SUPs complete with a downriver sprint, a cross course and all sorts of dry land activities. The water sports park is paralleled by a terraced spectatormontrose areas, allowing stream-side spectators to enjoy the river and cheer on competitors.

The best part of the Montrose Park is that you can run it all summer long since the river flow is controlled for irrigation. This makes for continual flows long after water in other Rocky Mountain rivers has dwindled.

The a6000 is mirrorless magic

0

The new mirrorless from Sony, the a6000 is a little camera that packs a big punch. As a photographer I am always looking for the next dSLR and what features it will include. But sometimes I forget to check out the smaller, pocket cameras. And while I wasn’t looking Sony jumped into the big kid pool and developed a mirrorless camera with almost all the dSLR features in a compact body.

'This camera produces amazing image quality for the price, just $698 with a 15-60 lens, versus a dSLR which will run a couple grand. Really its the 24.3 megapixel APS-C sensor puts it on the map against its bulky dSLR competitors. With this sensor the a6000 is able to produce high-resolution still images and full HD movies. But the second greatest feature is the swift burst shooting. This sleek little camera manages 11 frames per second of continuous shooting with subject tracking. With this rapid fire shooting you are sure to get the shot.

While the quick autofocus is great for single images, on the downside the a6000 continuous autofocus can’t seem to match its burst rate. So its best to focus before the action gets moving too quickly. Another drawback is with high-ISO JPEGs, which can’t match the quality of my dSLR, so keep it under 1600 to not look over processed.

One thing the a6000 has but my dSLR definitely doesn’t, is built-in Wi-Fi. This allows you to instantly select and download images directly to your smartphone (can we say “instagram”). Sony also has a variety of downloadable apps ranging in features, but the top picks are a remote control feature, timelapse functions and automatic syncing to phone.

The 3-inch tilting LCD is also a nifty feature. It allows you to capture the moment with out using the viewfinder. It is perfect for getting shots from the ground or in tight spaces where you might be shooting blind otherwise. The a6000 has a handy built-in flash, perfect for slight fill-flash, but it also has a multi-interface shoe, allowing you to mount a regular flash onto the camera to shed some like on your subject.

And last but not least, at 285 grams, this is the best camera for all you ulta-lites to pack on your next adventure and never miss a moment. It fits easily in the side pocket of a pack, or inside a ski jacket, without adding much weight or bulk.

music on the go, the ECO Extreme

0

With the ECO Extreme, from Grace Digital, you can take your music anywhere.digital-grace-eco-extreme-review This durable case is perfect for the beach, hiking and backpacking, camping or a boating trip. If you can get there, it’ll follow you and create the perfect soundtrack.

Usually I am headed to the outdoors to unplug and disconnect. But at the same time I want good tunes for my adventures. This is where The ECO Extreme is the perfect blend of outdoor and tech, or science and nature, if you will. It is hardy enough to know that my iPhone will be protected, and I can lug it to the most rugged terrain.

The carabineer clip makes it ideal for hanging from a tree, a tent of a backpack. But I have to admit my favorite spot to clip the ECO Extreme is to the d-ring on the front of my paddle board, making it possible to rock groovy tunes for long paddle missions.

The Testsc_b003h3jjze-03intlg

So before I was willing to put y extremely expensive, and difficult to replace iPhone in the water I had to test out the ECO Extreme first. So I filled the bathtub, put a piece of paper in the case, and weighted it down underwater for 30 minutes. And sure enough, the paper came out perfectly dry.gdi-aqcse103

The high-impact, shock-resistant design withstands drops and bumps. This case also makes it perfect to take into places I might be worried about my phone taking a spill. I love to just lean it up against the rocks while climbing, and not worry about it being stepped on, crushed by a rock, or any other incident.

While safety for my device was my biggest concern, the ECO Extreme does not sacrifice sounds quality. The 30 hours of battery life, with just three AA batteries, makes this case perfect for long adventures, and dynamic sound performance throughout. And the spacious internal storage compartment can hold your keys, credit cards, driver’s license and cash too.

Opedix Core-Tec 2.0 Review

0

The women’s Opedix Core-Tec 2.0 offers a scientifically engineered base layer in the form of comfortable compression shorts. W_CT2.0_hero_grande_86d68958-23b7-4b94-9bfa-4de98305eba1Opedix makes several garments that are intended to promote dynamic alignment and optimal join function. Opedix uses a patented design they call Torque Reform Technology to enhance core stability. Basically by improving alignment, athletes will see reduced pain and be able to perform for longer.

This compression technology was a first for me but I decided to put it to the test. As I suited up in the pre-dawn hours for the five-mile hike up Hayden Peak I put on the form-fitting Opedix shorts as my base layer.

14168736644b184916f4fI was skeptical of the fit at first, as they seemed rather snug. I was worried my movement would be inhibited and I would overheat. But the four-way stretch material made them effective and versatile without being restrictive. The material is also moisture wicking and breathable so they were comfortable for the entire day, not to mention the anti-odor fabric will come in handy over time.

The shorts consist of twenty-six panels woven together, stretching from my lower abs over my quadriceps, for optimal fit and W_CT2.0_side_grande_47a0b9d7-b9bc-4b64-b58a-958a6a6c95ebfunction. There are essentially bands sown into the fabric that spiral up across the hips, which provides improved control and neutral pelvic alignment. This design is intended to reduce co
re muscle fatigue and I was pleasantly surprised to find that my hips and lower back were much less sore than usual for a steep hike of this length.

I can see how the Core-Tec shorts provide performance improvement over time. I find that when I hike my posture suffers- I lean forward to compensate for the heavy pack and the steep incline, which fatigues my back muscles. The shorts compress my hips into alignment with my back, making me stand up straighter and my back pain becomes minimal.

GlideSoul perfectly suited to SUP

0

Living high in the Rocky Mountains and far from the ocean waves and sandy beaches, you might not think you need a wetsuit. But with the wetsuitadvent of SUP, stand-up paddleboarding, in Colorado, a Glidesoul full wetsuit might be just what you need. The rivers of the Rockies are snowmelt, so when you expect barely above freezing flows, a wetsuit is a necessity.

For women, brands usually just make a men’s model wetsuit but a little smaller and with a splash of pink. But GlideSoul outfits are created for women by women, with expertise in sports and fashion.

Right out of the box I am impressed not just the bright designs but the high quality. The neoprene in 3/2 mm, seams are glued and blind-stitched and with silicone drops on wrists, ankles and neck to prevent water entry. The neck is snug but supple, so its comfortable while still keeping the icy river temps at bay.

The neoprene on the GlideSoul is thin and stretchy so it fits well, which is unusual for a wetsuit- which are usually black, formless blobs that even Giselle wouldn’t look good in.

Bwetsuit 2ecause its thin its more like moving in yoga pants, easy to stretch and reach, ensuring freedom and comfort to paddle and maneuver over rapids and waves, and even in cold water when I fall in.

To put this wetsuit through the wringer, I took it to the Glenwood white water park to catch some wave, Colorado style. While my neon green strips may not have helped me catch the wave, at least I looked good trying. The vibrant colors are certainly eye-catching, so now I just need my skill to match. And as soon as I was off the water the lightweight material was quick drying.

On of my favorite features was the knee reinforcements built into the wetsuit. Normally, I try to squeeze knee and elbow pads under the neoprene when running new rapids, but this adds a bulky appearance and concerns me that I might tear my wetsuit. But this was just enough protection to give me the freedom to fall and not fear the rocks, which still looking good in neon and leopard print.
